Moving my spinning bike upstairs to the loft is one of the best things I've ever done.
Quick recap: in November, our last cat, Kyoto, died of old age. We've been owned by a small handful of cats for the past 27 years, and our house showed it. Bose and Mags, in particular, were rather rough on our carpets and furniture. So, when Kyoto went to the Rainbow Bridge, we already knew we were headed into a cat-free period in our lives. I sprang into action: 1-800-Got-Junk? hauled away the old furniture (and the gargantuan projection TV) in the loft and living room. We got new carpeting. (never getting berber again! Ugh!) And best of all, I revamped our home theatre system, with a new receiver, Blu-Ray player, LCD TV, and a huge black leather sofabed from Jennifer Convertibles.
Now I can lounge around all evening and weekend and watch TV and movies, right? Well, some of the time, sure. But I don't like to do that much sitting, it makes me antsy. I sit all day at work, do I also need to sit around at home all the time? Also, I tend to fall asleep if I sink into comfy couch for too long.
Spinning bike to the rescue!
I've had a spinner for several years. It's been down in the basement, with a few bags of books and not much else. (I redid the basement, too, but that's another story for another time.) I haven't used it much, as it was BORING, and I felt like I was in Siberia whenever I used it.
So, I slipped the 1-800 guys a few bucks each to move the bike upstairs.
Now, with the bike parked at a good viewing angle to the TV, I don't feel isolated every time I work out. Sure, I still listen to my iPod, and have even found some spinning podcasts. But I can also watch TV and spin, and it makes the time go by pretty fast. A typical hour-long program will take about 45 minutes. I can watch all or part of a movie. I don't have to spin hard; all I have to do is what I feel like doing at the moment.
It's only March, and while I've gotten out on pre-dawn rides a few times, the weather's still not great. But now that I have the loft bike, I'm getting my morning exercise in, even when I can't go outside. I've gotten a lot more exercise this winter; it feels good.
Location, location, location. It's important in real estate . . . and also, apparently, in exercise equipment.
